Kath Fries is an artist from Sydney Australia, working across sculpture, installation and drawing. Her practice involves finding sensory ways of reconnecting with our material and immaterial surroundings, to evoke quiet moments of enchantment and poetic material metaphors. By developing playful sensory encounters and empathetic relationships in her work, Fries investigates different perspectives about our ecological interdependencies that challenge ingrained assumptions of human dominance and disconnection. Her recent projects have focused on our relationships with the interconnectedness of fungi in changing bio-diverse ecologies, mycelium in habitat regeneration, and how we can tell these stories to engage wider audiences. Fries’ creative practice is informed by her mindfulness and meditation practices, embedded in Buddhist philosophies of impermanence, interconnection, and compassion. These understandings about our entangled existences, focus creative engagements within layered histories, complex biodiversity, sentient matter-flow, circular system-thinking, and embodied experiences.
