Noor Stenfert Kroese

Artist, researcher & scenographer

Linz, Austria / Rotterdam, Netherlands

Noor Stenfert Kroese is a new media artist, scenographer and artistic researcher. From a critical post-human perspective, her works evolve around the relationship between humans and non-humans in spatial performative installations. Noor completed Interface Cultures (MA) at the University of Art and Design Linz (AT) and Scenography (BA) at the Amsterdam University of Arts (NL). Besides her artistic practice she is also working as university assistant in the MA programme Art & Science at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Inspired by the interconnectedness of science, nature and technology, Noor’s artistic practice highlights the intertwinement between her installations and the spectators. Her current research focuses on data storytelling of living organisms. The unknown of the living organism is explored through sensors and robotics and translated into tactile human experienceable outcomes. Her work does not provide a direct answer but seeks the space to ask questions and experience.

Noors work was exhibited and performed at venues and festivals such as the Ars Electronica Festival (AT), Festival X (UAE), Barcelona Design Week (ES), and Dutch National Opera & Ballet (NL). She received awards for her work from YouFab Global Creative Awards (JP), New Media Architecture Biennale (CA) and Prins Bernard Young Talent Award (NL).

ZOE (2022)

ZOE is a temporary co-existence between reishi mushrooms and a custom-made robotic system. Noor Stenfert Kroese and Amir Bastan explore with ZOE the possibilities of internal communication between a robotic system and reishi. Within this seeming paradox between nature and technology, an ecosystem occurs that cares for and affects each other through sensing technologies. It continues onto the research of the interaction and unknown communication within fungal mycelia networks.

ZOE uses sensors to collect data from the environment as well as the mycelium of the reishi. It uses this data to create the internal communication between the reishi and the robotic system. The reishi and their behaviour defines what the robotic system does and the robotic system influences the shape of the light-sensitive reishi mushrooms. Over time this influence sculpts the shape of the fruiting bodies of the reishi as a reflection of their ecosystem. The data is used in the space to create a sensory experience to explore this unknown communication. Finally, the data-carpets are created from the daily collected data from reishi in relation to their environment to see if we could experience any correlation between them. These tactile data visualisations explore the outcome and the unknown communication going on in this temporary co-existence.

Are we able to tune in on these different rhythms of all of the parts involved, and what are we in a space that is with, but not about us?

RHIZA (2021)

RHIZA is an interspecies connector that invites you to become part of the communication between her mycelium and oyster mushrooms. The tower's oyster mushrooms and mycelium continuously exchange biodata through electrical signals. The biosensors pick up these electrical signals and translate them into vibrations you can feel by standing bare feet on the mycelium floor pads. RHIZA emerged as an aspiration to enable human beings to transgress their own species and connect with otherness in multiple ways. This complex network with their subtle blend of cooperation and conflict can be seen as an example of how we relate with each other and our environmental systems. Like human society, this growing inter-species society is characterised by variety, with its capacity to help, hinder, cooperate, and exploit. Nature is built on connections and so are we.
