Lives and works in Bornheim, Germany

German-based artist Birgit Wenninghoff is interested in the many ways in which life manifests itself in its interwoven and complex nature, both in general and in her artistic work. Through various processes of selection, fragmentation and recomposition, she attempts to open up a new perspective on experience. Her doctoral thesis at the University of Art and Design in Linz investigates the conditions of place perception and identity formation. This question methodologically touches on the fields of structuralism and phenomenology. Her interest in fungi is based on their ambivalent character, which is reflected both in their appearance as fragile and rapidly decaying carposomes on the earth's surface and in their uncontrollable but stable rhizome-like life underground. For some years now she has been exploring the possibilities of translating the manifestations of carposomes artistically.

Birgit Wenninghoff studied product design (Dipl. Des.) at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, specialising in ceramics, porcelain and glass design, and fine arts (M.F.A.) at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, where she now runs the ceramics workshop and teaches sculpture.
