“When people ask what I do, I often say “I’m a mushroom artist”. The look on their faces gets me every time – laughter, disbelief or confusion follow. Well, turns out I’m not alone. Mushrooms, fungi, and nature inspired artists are everywhere. Whether we come together through the love of fungi or some form of symbiosis, Mycelium Rising is a show that celebrates our connection to nature.
What better setting to display these artists than a mushroom lab? The Mycelionaires’ Mushroom Lab has welcomed mushroom lovers and artists for the last three years during Art Week at MaHalla under the name Primordia 1, 2, & 3. This year, Julian Roth (founder of Mycelionaires) asked me to curate the show that runs together with MaHalla’s UNRUHE. Not officially part of Berlin Art Week, we are crashing it with our own addition to the week’s spectacle.

Fungi keep pushing into medicine, architectural, agricultural, and beyond, but they have always inspired beautiful art. The connective nature of mycelium, the wonder and awe inspiring mushrooms that pop up from the strangest places in the oddest forms and the metaphors they offer – connection, symbiosis and the importance of taking care of our Mother Earth – are what brings us all together for Mycelium Rising.
